Who am I?
I’m a compulsory¹ gymnastics coach, podcast producer, and professional researcher. I was a gymnast myself in the 90s and early 2000s, and then again in my mid-30s.
You can read about my personal gymnastics journey over at the Atlantic.
I also helped write and produce American Prodigies, a podcast series about the history of Black women in gymnastics. The company that funded it is garbage, so it’s a little tricky to find, but it’s also the work I’m most proud of (out of more than a decade of journalism). You can find the first episode here (on Apple Podcasts) or here (on Spotify).
For all of its maddening problems and confusing rules, gymnastics is thrilling to watch — there’s drama and intrigue and politics and triumph and loss — everything we love to see in a sport. I’d love to coach you from confused armchair spectator into a thriving armchair expert. Hell, maybe I can even convince you to give adult gymnastics class a try.
If there’s anything in particular that you want demystified about women’s artistic gymnastics — drop me a line!
